“No matter what accomplishments you make, somebody helped you.”
(American tennis great Althea Gibson; also credited with breaking the colour barrier in her sport.)
As a freelance writer, I love the freedom of carving out my own career path. Along the way I aim to live holistically, actively pursue work that inspires me, and create connections with people which are meaningful and positive. I’m also keen to encourage the shift towards a cleaner, greener planet.
For me, the bigger picture is served best by living it well day-to-day. I’m continually inspired by new ideas, projects and ways of seeing the world. Many of my interests end up as stories in areas like as entrepreneurship and productivity, community, living greener and working well. You can check out samples of my published work in my portfolio.
I believe any success is only sustainable when you are surrounded by quality people. Whether you are working solo, as a creative professional, or in business, a dream team is essential. It’s a group of people who inspire, support or push you (all with your happiness and success in mind).
Here’s who I turn to at the moment to sound out problems, get advice or simply feel connected. I’m so fortunate to have every one of them in my life; thanks guys! (All women…odd. Happy to shift the balance a little!)
- Valerie Khoo – Entrepreneur, journalist and all round dynamo. Valerie was my first writing mentor; then my editor; now she’s a friend as well as my ‘boss’ at Australian Writers’ Centre. I remain eternally grateful for the advice and support this inspiring businesswoman continues to provide in my career.
- Samantha Nolan-Smith – If you’re a woman in transition (work or personal) you couldn’t be in better hands.
- Kate Hennessy – Fellow journalist and a gun at writing, well, anything.
In terms of working well and productivity, the work of both Tim Ferriss (author of The 4-Hour Work Week) and Merlin Mann (of Inbox Zero) have helped me ensure that the time I DO spend working is both efficient and enjoyable. (See, the guys got a look in at last.)
